Climate change has had a significant impact on global weather patterns, and one of the most striking consequences is the increase in the frequency and intensity of floods. Floods resulting from climate change pose serious challenges to the environment, economies and communities around the world. One of the main causes of increased flooding is increasing global temperatures. With higher temperatures, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor also increases. This causes more intense rainfall, which can trigger flash floods in various areas. For example, areas that are not usually exposed to extreme rainfall now often experience sudden heavy rain. In addition, melting polar ice and glaciers also contributes to rising sea levels. Coastal communities face greater risks from flooding due to rising sea levels. Major cities such as Jakarta, New Orleans, and Miami are experiencing serious challenges due to a combination of heavier rains and continued sea level rise. The sinking of these cities is a real threat in the coming decades. Changes in rainfall patterns have also resulted in increased flooding events in some areas while other areas experience drought. For example, South Asia, which is one of the regions most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, has experienced severe flooding due to increasingly unpredictable monsoons. Delays or acceleration of the rainy season can damage agriculture and threaten food security. It was also found that floods associated with climate change are often accompanied by broader social impacts. Affected communities often face significant economic losses, recovery costs, and population displacement. Poor communities are the most vulnerable, as they usually do not have sufficient resources to rebuild or adapt to new conditions. Mitigation and adaptation efforts are very important in facing this challenge. Better water resource management, city planning that considers flood risks, and the use of environmentally friendly technology to strengthen infrastructure are steps that need to be taken. In addition, increasing public awareness about the impacts of climate change and the need for collective action is also very crucial. At the global level, international agreements such as the Paris Agreement seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to halt the rate of climate change. However, effective implementation at the local level remains a major challenge, given the differences in capabilities of countries and regions in dealing with this issue. The impact of flooding due to climate change is not only a physical phenomenon, but also creates psychological challenges for those who lose their homes and their way of life. This creates an urgent need to create support systems for flood survivors, including mental health services. Strengthening community resilience to climate change and flood risk is an integral step in building a safer and more sustainable future for all.
